How to Save Money on Cruises: Tips from a Pro Cruiser
Hey there, cruisers and dry landers! 🌊 I’m on the Caribbean Princess in San Francisco, enjoying a gorgeous day. I wanted to share some tips on how to avoid overspending on your cruise — because let’s be honest, those little purchases can really add up! You'll find a free downloadable checklist with all of these tips below.
For over three decades, I’ve been painting ocean scenes for collectors worldwide. Now, I spend a lot of time chasing them from the deck of a cruise ship — and I’ve learned a few ways to save money along the way.
Here are my top tips:
1. Book Early or Book Late You can often find great last-minute deals, or plan far in advance for the best rates. If you’re okay with an inside stateroom, you’ll save a lot — balconies are expensive! I usually book an inside room first and then upgrade when the "bid on upgrade" email comes through. This strategy saves a lot of money while still giving you options.

2. Skip the Drink Package (Sometimes) I personally never book the drink package because I don’t drink specialty coffees or sodas — just black coffee, tea, water, and the occasional alcoholic drink. That’s all I need, and it saves me a lot.
Pro tip: you can bring a bottle of wine on board. Ask your stateroom attendant for wine glasses or grab some from the bar — perfect for enjoying a glass with dinner.

3. Excursions I usually book at least one cruise-line excursion, but they can be pricey. Often, it’s less expensive and more fun to explore a new port on your own or grab a resort pass. I made a video about Cruise Line Vs. DIY Excursions, so check that out if you would like to find out which option might be right for you.
4. Specialty Dining Specialty dining can be a big splurge, especially if you might be a party of four. For me alone, the main dining room is more than enough — especially as a German who appreciates a hearty meal! Three courses (or more if you want) are included, and the food is usually excellent.
Bonus: My Sugar Scrub Quick side note — I’ve been making a handmade sugar scrub for five years, and it’s finally on Amazon! It’s made with organic coconut oil, lavender, and sugar crystals, leaving your skin glowing, soft, and smooth. Perfect for a little self-care while you’re relaxing on your cruise.
5. Onboard Shopping Sales in the cruise ship shops can be tempting, but most items are cheaper on land. Don’t let boredom or impulse purchases empty your wallet — stick to what you really want and enjoy the free amenities instead.
6. Pack Smart Cruise ship toiletries and essentials are often overpriced. Make a packing list in advance — deodorant, toothpaste, sunscreen — and stick to it. I keep a note in my suitcase to make sure I don’t forget anything.
7. Wi-Fi I personally splurge on Wi-Fi, but you can skip it if you don’t need constant connectivity. There are usually plenty of ports during a week-long cruise, which is enough time to check messages or emails when you dock.

8. Cruise Photos Professional cruise photos are fun but expensive — often around $25 per photo. I always get at least one professional shot for memories, but the rest I take myself or ask fellow travelers to snap a photo. Selfie sticks are lifesavers!
9. Use Free Onboard Perks Don’t forget about complimentary items! On Princess, for example, there are free bathrobes, continental breakfast in your room, coffee, fruit, and lemonade. Take advantage of these little perks — they add comfort without the extra cost.
Cruising doesn’t have to break the bank — with a few smart strategies, you can enjoy every moment without overspending. 🌞
